Province Ale Porter

Introducing the first release from the Province Ale Company, a “wholly owned imaginary subsidiary of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery.”  For the year of 2013 we will be releasing a new beer on the third weekend of each month, which will be a recreation of an antique recipe sourced from a late 19th Century brewing manual.  Owner of the Province Ale Co., Nicolo Mastroianni (Sam Calagione), and Head Brewer Ragged Jordan (pub brewer Ben Potts) will be taking you back to a time when the science behind brewing was a little more fuzzy and the use of unique ingredients was the norm.

Province Ale Co

For this first release, we chose a sturdy brew to suite the cold winter weather, a strong porter.  The use of Essentia Bina, or coloring made from sugar, gives this ale its ruddy reddish brown hue and notes of scorched molasses.  To make our Essentia Bina, Nicolo and Ragged Jordan first created an invert syrup with the finest southern molasses (provided by Whiskey Al, our good friend who distills some darn fine rums), and freshly squeezed lemon juice.  This syrup was then reduced down until burning, and then rediluted and added to the boil to lend color and that burnt molasses flavor.  The finest English pale malts and hops were employed for this beer, and the wort was fermented with an English yeast strain originally sourced from Henley-on-Thames, just outside of London.

So saddle up to the bar, and have a bully time while enjoying this first of a dozen esoteric brews!

Province Ale Porter will be debuted for our Province Ale Co. 'investors' (more info on how to participate here) at noon on Saturday, January 18, 2013. It will be available to other guests beginning at 4pm that same day. It will around as long as it lasts!

Due to limited availability on our Brewpub Exclusive beers, we do not sell them by the growler - sorry.
