Looking for a seasonal book recommendation as we settle in to winter? At the inn we keep our woodburning fireplace and outdoor fire cauldron going to keep nice and warm, and Jack London's "Call of the Wild, White Fang, and To Build a Fire" remind us to be thankful for the heat.

Sick beard, Herman.

We build a fire everyday and are reminded that it is our natural instincts that have allowed us to thrive as a species, not e-mail. Get outside and explore, but don't forget to take some matches and firewood for your campsite.

Herman Melville's "The Whale" (aka “Moby Dick”) is another good one for the darker days of winter. It reminds us to conserve what we have. “For God's sake, be economical with your lamps and candles! not a gallon you burn, but at least one drop of man's blood was spilled for it.”

The chapter on chowder is good reminder to eat up some of our Dogfish Hard-Tack Chowder. And let’s not forget that Melville could have also been a brewer in his next life with that seriously epic beard he rocked!
