let me preface this post by saying that i will never stop drinking dogfish head for any reason...
I hate writing these words....but i did not find world wide stout particularly appealing. i underestimated the words "ridiculous amount of barley". i did't think it would be as sweet as it was, i wish it would have been balanced with a bit more bitterness. world wide stout is in every sense and extreme beer, which i give DFH credit for having the balls to make. it's basically a barely wine. i want to know what everyone else thinks of this beer, i'm hoping the rest of you out there liked it, and my tastes are just not firing on all cylinders today. if you do like it, please tell me what you like about it. go...

Found this beer at my local craft beer store. The date on the bottle was 2010. Tried a bottle and have to say this beer is one of my top favorites. Only thing that holds me back is the $10 per bottle price tag. But well worth a special drink from time to time. Going to go back and pick up a few more to allow to age for a "special" occasion. Thanks Dogfish Head for being bold enough to make beers like this. Keep them coming please!!!
We discovered our local 'pusher' keeps a backroom stash of some of the more rare brews. A bottle of World Wide Stout (2010 D) was out on the general shelf and I grabbed it immediately, being curious since we enjoyed an event, held a few years ago here in Detroit, where the Brewery's local rep visited with a coffeebean contraption that slow-steeped one of the stouts.
The moment he saw it in my hand, he began apologizing. "That shouldn't have been on the shelf."
Yeah, so I'm buying it.
"Gotta warn ya, it's $10 for that one."
Yeah? And...
Well, he finally realized we were a bit more serious than he previously imagined...and shared that he keeps all the rare ones in back. I felt like I was doing a drug deal.
Chilled it and poured into my standard pint glass...then HAD to come here and look it up, since the APL wasn't listed on the bottle. I had no idea what I was getting into. When I saw the recommendation to use a snifter instead, it all began to make sense.
Thanks for the efforts...this one is a hit. I am certain I will never be able to finish two in one session, but it doesn't matter. One makes my entire being smile, especially those finicky neck glands.
I'll agree with the others who say it is sweeter than I expected from a stout, but I'll add a resounding WHO THE F*&K CARES, this is totally fantastic ethereal nirvana-in-your-mouth. I could die now and feel fulfilled in life. I don't want to, and won't rush it, because now that you maniacs have instilled the concept of a 'beer cellar' in my psyche, I have even more to live for.
Damn you. I love you.
Cheers,John
P.S.: Yes, that would be the stout talking back.
...especially after a few years of cellaring
I love it! My favorite DFH. This is very sad news for me. I can only say I don't agree with the choice but, I can only hope hiatus doesn't mean an extended absence. If it does return, please DON'T change the recipe!
I love the sweet, I love the strong, I love the WWS. I'b buy more if it wasn't $10 a pop. I'm more apt to invest the $ into ingredients for a strong homebrew stout. I'd love to try a side by side comparison with an aged bottle, but I can never keep them long enough.
I am drinking WWS right now. It is a very special occasion for me because I live in Turkey (Military) so I had to have a friend bring some back on a recent trip to New Jersey. It is pretty damn sweet, and I too would like to see it ballanced a bit, but all in all, its the best beer I have had since I have been here. The only real choice here is Macro brews from the states, or there local, unregulated beer. So, Cheers to the WWS!!!
I agree with the original poster on this-- too sweet and I'd add too high ABV. Seems much more like a Barleywine than a Stout or an Imperial Stout. Love a lot of Dogfish Head but not likely to go for this again. It'd be grand if Dogfish would produce a classic stout along the lines of O'Hara's or the Guinness Foreign Extra.
I'm about to crack open an '04 WWS. Wish me luck lol
Let me also preface that we love Dogfish, even bought some stuff for a game room & have tried most varieties. However, I am not sure about this one....I came online to see what "flavors" this is considered to be as it tasted just like drinking straight up soy sauce. (had leftover Chinese and went great with it lol) The page didn't say what the flavors were supposed to be except for a dessert drink?? Definitely wouldn't consider it that so came to the boards - and see you guys say it tastes sweet. I am now wondering if we got a bad batch? Can anyone else advise what flavors they taste?? Will probably buy another just because you all enjoy it...but I'm not holding my breath... Thanks for the info!
If it was sweet, then I'm guessing you got a bottle that had at least a year of aging on it. I have yet to drink WWS, although I have one bottle in my collection. I only have one bottle of it, and I had to travel about 1000 miles to get it, so I've been waiting for a special occasion. Last weekend, I opened a bottle of 2009 3 Floyds Dark Lord, and I was surprised how sweet it had become. I'm guessing this is what happens to these big beers after a while. The same night, I also opened a bottle of 120 minute, which was 2 to 3 years old, and it was a bit sweet also. I guess if you want a more assertive bitter and roasty character, its necessary to drink WWS within 6 months or so.
A few months back I aquired a 2 yr bottle of WWS. It was a definite shock to me as far as the flavor goes. At that ABV it's gonna be sweet. I too didn't expect it to be as sweet as it was either. I was really expecting a harsh boozy stout, typical of some Imperials, but I felt it almost had a cooling mouthfeel to it. Still poured like used motor oil though which is always a good sign. I can't say I'll be buying a case but I'll pick up a few singles next time I run across it. Very good beer to share around a campfire.
I thought the World Wide Stout was really good and I very much enjoyed listening to all of the folks around me, freaking out on the pleasing taste of such an edgy offering. Of course San Diego is comprised of a bunch of Beer loving full mouth flavor junkies.
Like everything else, this is a matter of personal taste. As for me, I friggin' love WWS!
I hate it when i add it to my cart for $10. When i get home i wish i had bought 9 more. I LOVE it everytime. "hey Ferb, i know what we're going to do today". Get some GFH.
Trying my first bottle right now. Love it! Sweeter than I expected, but amazing. My wife was pisswd when she saw how much I was spending on a bottle if beer, but when she saw the brand she understood. 120 Minute has some strong competition with this one!
