Chicory Stout Is A Champ... The Dog, That Is!

The Other Chicory Stout

It can be argued that the rise of civilization and its continued progress centers on developing better beer and better dogs. Helping to lead these most essential pursuits are the likes of Dogfish Head Brewery and the GreatMountain Chinook Kennels. And, as fate will have its way, these two noble institutions crossed their kindred spirit paths lately in an unusual and delightful way.

The rare and fine crafted beers of the Dogfish Head Brewery are well known to the reader, but the rare and noble Chinook dog breed is likely unfamiliar to most. The breed is a uniquely American sled dog that has historical ties to early American Antarctic exploration and at the same time it is perhaps the finest of companion dogs. The parallels here should be apparent and endless.

And so it was over a year ago that the GreatMountain Kennels had the Dogfish Head litter. Each of the five fine pups was named after a brew. They were colored and marked only in shades of beer from a stout dark brown-black, through amber and tawny shades, to the near white head of a pilsner. As the pups grew and were adopted by their families, new names were given to all but one - the GreatMountain Chicory Stout.

Recently, Chicory Stout tried to do her name proud and successfully became a Champion show dog. The beer and the dog reign supreme, as it is right, and as it has been through history. Champion GreatMountain Chicory Stout (shown in photos to the right) lives in Georgia where, coincidentally, Dogfish Head brews recently became distributed. And while we know this dog and these brews will rise to even higher levels, let us pause to celebrate all!
