We hope folks enjoyed tonight's episode of 'Brewmasters.' Theres no use crying over spilt 120 Minute IPA. The last production batch had to be dumped because it wasnt up to our high standards so we knew it wouldnt be up to the standards of many hardcore beer lovers.
Weve worked too long establishing our reputation for quality and innovation and , while we certainly didnt budget to dump this much, or this expensive of a beer, every year Dogfish does budget to let some batches that didnt meet our expectations go down the drains.
Each batch of beer we brew goes through over 40 micro and sensory checkpoints and we are very proud of our QC program. But rest assured - we are hard at work with experiments to tweak the recipe so that the next production batch of 120 Minute IPA meets all of our high standards. Our batch of 120 is scheduled to go out into distribution in April 2011. Assuming all of our tests and experimental mini-brew go well between now and then we are confident we can hit that target date.
Thanks for beer-ing with us and for all the ongoing support! Sam
Just finished watching an episode of Brewmasters where a vent tube went missing in one of the bottles. I agree; a customer finding a 4-inch metal vent tube in their beer would be disastrous!! ...unless of course the person who was to find it in their bottle was rewarded in some relatively small way!!! Was that whole situation a crisis or an opportunity?
so when is the next batch of 120 going to be ready for consumption? :)
Question, If the profile was too sweet why couldn't you add say beano to the brew in the proper propotions and help the profile be less sweet after a secondary ferment if the Yeast was still viable? I am assuming that it was due to the content of the show.
As most commenters seem to agree it was dissapointing that you dumped the 120 without using it.
Even more disapointing I am pretty sure I just purchased some of this bad 120 at the Fairfax dogfish head brewpub. It was taisty and I beleive it was a mix of the overly sweet 120 and mabe the Palo Santo.
It was labeled as DFH ale and can be seen on the beer list at the below link.

If this is not the 120, what was it? And if it is I take a little offence to drinking something you claimed to have dumped down the drain. I do think it was best to use the bad beer, but it is important to be honest.
Hey Sam I was curious why you guys didnt use the off batch for something else. it sounded like no one said it was bad just didnt taste like 120, could it have been mixed and blended to create a new complex beer? that sounds like the perfect time to expierement.
also i understand your high quality standards and all but while you guys were dumping it how come you didnt allow your employees to star growlering their fill. sounds like a perfect opprutinity to turn this downer into a small boost for your hard workers.
i guess it would have all taken time, and time is money right?
I love your show and your beer. I had DVRd this episode - just watched what was an unhappy ending to say the least. Watching that beer go down the drain made me think about an episode of "Drinking Made Easy" where they featured someone turning beer into moonshine. Although, I suppose that might be illegal....
Well, best of luck on the next batch.
Your company rocks and you are a pioneer of atypical beer :)
Bet there was a lot of happy fish when that got pumped out into the waters.. :)
How bout this, a beer that doesnt meet the high standards doesnt get bottled under that product name. But maybe make the mistakes bottled novelties and call them "mere mortals" or "only human" series beers. I'll bet your bad beer is better than my best home brewed beers. Cheers
"bad 120" becomes good scotch ale?
Love the show. I find myself feeling the anxiety that the employees must of had just by watching that beer go down the drain. This just means that it'll be that much more in demand in the spring! Can't wait.
