Alright Georgetown, Delaware- I came, I saw, and I disposed of any preconceived notions about chicken farms. Smell? What smell? With a stress free environment, these chickens are just hanging out, being awesome. I always assumed that chickens and chicken farms are naturally smelly. Turns out, stress hormones are the cause, and we humans are the main culprit. Carolyn, the mother hen of The Farm, showed me the way of her 40 acre homestead. Wait a minute, where are the huge buildings that contain thousands of chickens? You won't find any of that here folks! Instead you'll find small hut-like buildings made from recycled campers and illuminated by solar energy. Packing themselves away at night, each small building has a fenced in area where the chickens are free to roam all day long. These small buildings aren't the only place where solar energy is in use. The Farm is also home to a solar powered well. Carolyn said it best, "If Armageddon came tomorrow, we'd have water!" The Farm is 100% USDA certified organic, and she has the stack of papers to prove it! The welfare of the chickens is of the utmost importance. No chemicals, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms will be found on this farm. Along with welfare, The Farm focuses on being good stewards of the land. Each small building is relocated once a week so as to protect the quality of the soil. A healthy chicken is a happy chicken, and a happy chicken moves every week! Okay, I get why these chickens are the best of the best, but does our pub chef Dennis? He sure does! According to him we use 'em because, "they are fresh local eggs, brought straight from chicken to kitchen. They have larger yolks, and a creamier flavor." It doesnt matter how big the demand is for their chickens, The Farm will never sacrifice quality. No good ever came from a stressed out chicken, and that's why you won't find one at The Farm!
